The Art of Mola-Making

Molas are part of the traditional clothing worn by Guna women. They are created by layering several pieces of fabric, which are then cut and sewn to form the design.

Patterns may be inspired by geometric shapes, animals, plants, or scenes from everyday life. Each piece requires time, precision, and skills passed down through generations.

Learning directly from Guna artisans offers a deeper understanding of the mola—not only as a textile art, but also as an important part of Guna culture.

The Workshop

Each day, time is set aside to work with artisans from different families.

This is not a conventional sewing class. You will sit and sew alongside the women, follow their guidance, and gradually develop your own mola. There will also be time to talk, ask questions, and learn more about their lives in the archipelago.

Bilingual guidance in English and Spanish is available to help you follow the practical work and understand the context behind each meeting.

No previous sewing experience is required.

The Journey

Throughout the four-day trip, the catamaran will be your base for exploring the archipelago. Between workshops, there will be time to sail, swim, snorkel, or visit the islands by kayak or paddleboard.

The experience brings together the slow, detailed work of sewing, life on board, and time spent with Guna families. It is a way to discover Guna Yala from the water while gaining a better understanding of the people who call it home.

Practical Information

Each departure is coordinated with the families taking part in the workshops. Dates therefore depend on their availability, and groups are kept small.

Prices start at USD 2,550 per person and include accommodation on board, all meals and drinks, and the listed activities.
