Explore the Darién rainforest from Guna Yala

San Blas may be best known for its islands and turquoise water, but mainland Guna Yala extends into the Darién rainforest, revealing a very different side of the archipelago.

This five-hour morning excursion takes you through the rainforest in Río Sidra with Lisa, a well-known figure throughout Guna Yala. In addition to guiding this route for more than 30 years, Lisa is a respected Guna artisan whose molas are among the most recognized in the region.

The Trail to the Waterfall

The outward route follows a trail surrounded by dense vegetation. It leads into the rainforest and passes through a Guna cemetery, a place approached with respect and closely connected to the history of the area.

Along the way, Lisa shares stories, customs, and beliefs from her community. She also explains the traditional uses of some of the plants found in the rainforest and the Guna people’s relationship with the land.

The trail leads to a waterfall surrounded by vegetation, where there will be time to swim and rest.

Returning Along the River

The return route follows the river.

Along the way, you will find clear natural pools, hanging vines, and small rock slides formed by the water. The journey back combines walking with opportunities to swim and move through the river.

Lisa stays with the group throughout the excursion and adapts the route to the conditions in the rainforest and the river level.

Practical Information

The excursion must be requested before your trip. It is subject to weather conditions, river levels, and the route planned by the captain.

The crew will usually prepare a snack for you to take on the excursion, although this may vary depending on the boat and the arrangements for each stay.

We recommend bringing swimwear, shoes suitable for walking and getting wet, sun protection, insect repellent, and a bottle of water.
